BLJ - still unknown?

Post by mk209 »

Is this BLJ mark still unknown? I came across 2 teaspoons dated 1828 Exeter.

Hi Matt,

I'm still none the wiser about BLJ.

I’ve spent hours going through court/bankrupt files and business registers but nothing too. Is the mark on many spoons or has it just been found on a few teaspoons? Maybe I’ll start searching further afield in Bristol or other areas, hopefully one day we will know.

Thanks, Matt

Ok.....we have 2 candidates for this mark:

Benjamin Jonas watchmaker of Teignmouth (later registered in Exeter as a silversmith 1848) - Nephew of Benjamin Jonas plymouth silversmith of Plymouth

B.L. Joseph formally of Liverpool who married into the Jacobs family, he married Betsy, Miriam Jacobs’s daughter. Miriam was a silversmith in Bedford Street, Plymouth in 1841.

Two possibles......

Actually there is a third:

Betsy Jacobs - did she try her hand at silversmithing too like her mother?

The father Benjamin Jonas 1767-1846 the Plymouth silversmith is a prime candidate but we don’t know his middle name?
